First announced in November 2007, Project Kangaroo was billed as a 'one-stop shop' for video content online and was expected to offer users more than 10,000 hours of TV, with around 90 per cent available for free and the rest available for rent or purchase.
However, the Competition Commission rejected plans for the service earlier this year, saying it wouldn't benefit viewers.This was not welcomed by senior management at broadcasters Channel 4 and ITV, as the CIO of ITV Richard Cross explained to CIO UK.
It is thought the mobile network provider is one of two companies that has expressed an interest in purchasing the technology that would have formed the basis of the service, which initially cost in the region of £20m. Orange said it would use the technology in its own TV service.
"We are examining this company and we see of course that it could be interesting. Nothing has been decided but we can confirm we are examining it," said Orange's parent company, France Telecom.
