The Telegraph plans to follow in the footsteps of The Times and The Sunday Times, by charging web users to access content.

The newspaper group is currently drawing up plans that will see some of its content put behind a paywall, although web users will be able to view some articles for free.

"The final decision has not been made, but it will not be an impregnable paywall like the Times. It will be a metered system or, less likely, micropayments," a source familiar with the Telegraph's strategy told The Financial Times.

Another source told The FT: "We never said never to paying for content. It is a process of evolution."

However, the source said the paywall was unlikely to come into force before next summer.

"Like all publishers, TMG continually evaluates the developments in the digital sector. No decisions have been made on the introduction of a paid-content model," The Telegraph said.

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, The Telegraph's website attracted 33.9 million users in October.

News International, the parent company of The Times and The Sunday Times websites, started charging internet users to access content in July this year.

Web analytics firm Hitwise revealed in the week after parent company News International enforced the paywall on July 2, visits to The Times website were 66 percent less than before the charge was introduced.

In October, News International also put The News of the World, its Sunday tabloid, behind a paywall.
