Moving from a distributed application model to a centralised solution, construction firm George Wimpey was planning to add to its existing wide area network (WAN) traffic load, and had no detailed visibility of the size or type of traffic.

“Over the last two years we have embarked on a significant investment program to standardise our applications and infrastructure. The new applications are hosted in a new data centre by our IT outsourcing partner, LogicaCMG, distributed to the local businesses via Citrix and web technologies,” said Phil Jones, IT Service Delivery Manager at George Wimpey UK.

The firm chose network management systems from Ipanema was chosen to not only report on usage, but also actively manage application bandwidth and business priorities.

George Wimpey now uses the Ipanema System to measure, optimise and rightsize the network. At present the system manages all UK sites with physical ip|engines deployed in the LogicaCMG data centre and in the company’s business units.

End-users are now guaranteed application performance 100% of the time because bandwidth is now guaranteed for business critical applications.

The IT department has complete control over the network and is able to right-size it according to user needs whilst controlling and monitoring everything that crosses the WAN.

“Understanding the makeup of the WAN data will aid future spend decisions such as delaying the investment in extra bandwidth’” said Jones. “We are now able to totally control our current Network usage and proactively plan for future central application rollouts” said Jones.
